In-Depth Snow Leopard Review

Posted on 08 September 2009 by iBellix

On August 28th, Apple released their new operating system Snow Leopard, 10.6. Based on Canadian Prices… For $35.00 you can upgrade from Leopard the previous version of the operating system to Snow Leopard. The family pack, which gives you 5 licenses, is $59.00. Personally I think Apple did a great job on pricing for Snow Leopard. In the past upgrade from Tiger to Leopard was $169.00. $39.00 for an OS upgrade is a very affordable price for everyone. Now when Apple upgraded from Tiger to Leopard there where big changes. Dock was now 3D, menu bar was completely changed and a lot more features, styles and icons where changed. That upgrade from Tiger to Leopard was $169.00. Leopard to Snow leopard is $39.00 that seems like your not getting a lot. Design wise it was not upgraded that much, but when I say it wasn’t upgraded much there were some upgrades that many of you don’t see. The menu bar to me is a lot brighter, QuickTime 10 icon was revamped and if I may say myself it looks brilliant. There is quite a bit more but I don’t want to tell you everything about the OS. Because I want you to explore some of these new design features yourself.
But all the refinements for Snow Leopard are all under the hood. The entire OS is now 64-bit, meaning applications can address mass amounts of ram and other tasks go faster. The finder has been totally re-written in cocoa. Adding on to the greatness, threes now Exchange support in Mail, iCal, and Address Book, making Mac a player with major corporations.

The installation is amazing. It was the easiest install I have ever done. You pop in the install disc, select the drive you want to install it on, then hit install for an upgrade. 45 minutes later you restart and you have the full OS. Now there is the option of doing the clean install and that is on the bottom left of the install screen, look for customize. Now on the box and at WWDC they said that once you installed Snow Leopard you would get back 6GB of Hard Drive space. Personally I got 20GB, and I heard people were getting anywhere from 10 to 20GBs back.
There are also some minor tweaks in the program expose.The biggest new feature is holding down on an app’s icon, triggers Expose for that applications window,
Another great tweak is stacks. When you go into stacks and you click a folder it doesn’t lead you to the finder, it keeps you in the stack. Cocoa rewrite definitely improved things for finder. Live file previews are real nice. You can now read a file, watch a video, peek at things without having to open an app or even hit the space bar for a Quick look. It is a big perk for me. Now that’s about it for finder. It’s not like its re-designed in a design way but everything in finder is a lot quicker and snappier. It has essentially zero lag.

QuickTime 10 changed quite a bit for me. It has a really nice new dark interface. With a title bar, fast forward, play etc. that all disappears through playback. Now Quick Time 10 comes with Video recording which you can trim right in Quick Time just like the iPhone 3GS, which is nice because you can quick upload to YouTube without importing into iMovie to trim. It also comes with Screen Recording, and Audio recording, which is definitely a nice feature. Now Video and Audio may not be new for some of you who owned QuickTime Pro, but for everyone who didn’t it’s sure nice to have. Safari 4, the big changes are 64bit support, which translates into faster JavaScript performance. Now Apple said that Safari 4 shouldn’t crash as much. But when it first came it out I used it, crashed all the time, so I have cold feet and am sticking with Firefox. Speed has been great for me. Some applications that I open would do 2 or 3 bounces in the dock, some of them are now down to 1 or 2. Which makes a whirl of difference for people who have to get stuff done. Everything is a lot zippier, and the charts back it up.
Do some of these new “dark” style designs give to any hint of Apple’s next OS, definitely. But we will have to just wait and see.

The Big Question: Is Snow Leopard right for you, the word is YES. I think Snow Leopard is well worth the upgrade. For $39.00 just do it. I would recommend Snow Leopard to everyone. Speed and design is everything in a computer. Apple has successfully fulfilled that and more.

Move around your iPhone icons from your Mac

Posted on 24 August 2009 by Luqven

Movement, is a free native Mac OS X app that allows you to rearrange your phone/touch icons right from your mac. The app looks just like you spring board (where your icons are located on your device) except you can see all of your screens @ once. The is simple enough to use you simply hold and drag an icon to move it around just like you would on the iphone/touch. Then, your press a button (write apps) and the phone will respiring with the new page setup. The app is a bit buggy and lags a lot, but it just makes things so much easier that in the end it doesn’t take away at all from the experience.

You can get the app here;
