This tutorial tells how to get the brand new iOS4 GoldMaster(GM) Version for your iPhone 3GS, 3G, iPod Touch 3G and 2G, AKA Firmware 4.0 for FREE!

Apple today released iTunes 9.2 for both Windows and Mac. So you can now use iOS 4.0 on both.
Directions:
First, download iTunes 9.2.
Second, BACKUP your device in iTunes!
Third, Download the right iOS4 Firmware for your device. I recommend using firefox to download it since it downloads .ipsw files correctly and does not split it up.
Fourth, in iTunes Hold Option(Shift) and click on restore and choose the .ipsw file from your files. (Usually best to save it on your desktop)
After that, it will start restoring to iOS4 GM!
And there ya go! You should now have iOS4 working on your device.
If you are having trouble, please post in the comments. This will be an updated post if any new problems arise and workarounds need to be made. I can only fix them if I know about it. Thanks

okay, so i installed this on my iphone 3g, and i don't like it. how do i get back? i tried uninstalling 9.2 and installing an older version of itunes, but now my iphone doesnt sync because it says my iphone needs later version, i just want it back to what is was before…somoene please help!
Hi have you tried to 3g.ispw. keep the new itunes install it through that and when up and running you can revert back to old itunes

I downloaded the Itouch 3G one, but when I hold SHIFT and click on Restore it does not allow me to choose the IOS4 file – it goes straight to connecting to Itunes to download it like that. The reason I am seeking an alternative way of updating my itouch is because everytime I update, itunes eventually throws a message out ERROR 9006 and then I need to start the update again. It happens all the time.. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you

i treid it 4,5 times……trying to download software version 4 tru itunes and every time id oes not complete there is an error so i downloaded it from firefox….i have it in a folder the ipsw file……whenerver i click restore it shows to download new software and after accepting it starts downloading again clicking on the ipsw file also starts iune showing the same box of downloading software and after accepting its starts downloading again
All you have to do it be sure that your itunes is up to date and none of this is necessary. I have an iphone 3g and have my phone registered with itunes. I plugged my phone in (which opened itunes on my computer), went to devices in the sources list to your left, selected my phone, then I allowed it to sync and backup everything, then selected update under the summary menu…that simple! As long as you have the updated version of itunes and your phone/ipod is registered and linked to it on your computer then it's truly THAT SIMPLE. Matter a fact looking at the new features made me realize that when my daughter locked herself out of her phone a few weeks ago and I restored it then syncing everything back to it. I somehow updated it without even realizing it. Her ipod touch started giving her the options to put her apps in folders and all kinds of other cool stuff. I just thought it was something we never noticed before as she hasn't had it that long and that it does things the i phone doesn't as the i phone does things the ipod touch doesnt. Now, while updating my phone I've realized that I updated her ipod without even realizing it…lol
So, now that I've spelled it out in a rambling description I will 1,2,3,4, it for you.
IF YOU HAVE ITUNES UPDATED VERSION AND YOUR PHONE REGISTERED TO IT BOTH ON YOUR COMPUTER…follow the following steps. However, at whatever point (before you update) itunes attempts to sync and backup your device allow it to do so. This may take a while dependin on your computer. It took mine about 40 minutes.
1) Plug in your phone or ipod to your computer. This should open itunes. If not open itunes.
2) Select your phone or ipod under devices in the source center to the left.
3) In the summary pane (screen…you can click on summary at the top if it hasn't opened on it's on already) click check for updates. It should have it listed there and you click on it!! ") Mine actually had update already listed. It stated there was a new update and then had the option to restore below it.
NOTE…NEVER restore your phone if you do not have to. Although itunes does backup a lot of your information it doesn't back up ALL of it and you could lose quite a bit.

I tried updating it and i have a 2nd generation ipod touch but it doesnt have the features that the others have the only thing it added was the utilities box and a keyboard for security and i tried restoring it but it still won't fully update. Any ideas?

I just had the new ipod touch 64GB 3G firmware 3.1.3 (aug-2010). I can not install the downloaded ipsw 4.0 or 4.0.1 on it because the itunes (apple) does not allow to do it. It says "not eligible……..".
Is it a solution?

yo fourth step is unclear to me, the option/alt key doesnt let me choose the ispw file to restore only restore to backup or restore and update
