This tutorial tells how to get the brand new iOS4 GoldMaster(GM) Version for your iPhone 3GS, 3G, iPod Touch 3G and 2G, AKA Firmware 4.0 for FREE!

Apple today released iTunes 9.2 for both Windows and Mac. So you can now use iOS 4.0 on both.
Directions:
First, download iTunes 9.2.
Second, BACKUP your device in iTunes!
Third, Download the right iOS4 Firmware for your device. I recommend using firefox to download it since it downloads .ipsw files correctly and does not split it up.
Fourth, in iTunes Hold Option(Shift) and click on restore and choose the .ipsw file from your files. (Usually best to save it on your desktop)
After that, it will start restoring to iOS4 GM!
And there ya go! You should now have iOS4 working on your device.
If you are having trouble, please post in the comments. This will be an updated post if any new problems arise and workarounds need to be made. I can only fix them if I know about it. Thanks

Hello, I downloaded the iOS4 for my 3G iPod, and did the restoration as indicated. When trying to perform the Jailbrakme the iPod does not work. Connect to the wi fi ipod, jealbrekme access to and after the start of the slider to unlock the safari closes.

i have an ipod 2g, and I am trying to upgrade to the current OS. I currently have 2.2.1 and I can't figure out how to upgrade. When I try to download apps it tells me I need the 3.1 software update. I have searched everywhere on Apples site and can't find the update. Sorry if I sound stupid, but if anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it.

alright im not very computer smart so bear with me but i hav a 2nd gen Ipod touch and i backed it up then i downloaded the file and put it on my desktop and then i restored my ipod touch but the software isnt updated what am i doin wrong it says im supposed to click restore and select file but whenever i click restore it only asks me to coose device i want to restore from back up? help please

I just must be bad at this, but if your Ipod touch has only 3.2 and you want to upload through your computer without wireless it says you need itunes10 which you upload then it doesn't come back to the ios4 upload page. Endless loop. Help……

I have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8GB & it’s not jailbroken. I’ve got the Version 4.1 installed. Do I have to downgrade to 3.2 & do all those steps listed? Also, I believe I’ve got iTunes 10. Does that have to be down graded as well. Why is it so difficult to do this on an iPod Touch vs. an iPhone. It sucks not to be able to upgrade the memory on anything from Apple as well. You gotta buy a completely new device to get more memory. If you could eMail me & let me know what to do to get home screens & cool free apps or themes, I’d sure appreciate it.
