This tutorial tells how to get the brand new iOS4 GoldMaster(GM) Version for your iPhone 3GS, 3G, iPod Touch 3G and 2G, AKA Firmware 4.0 for FREE!
This should work without a developer account. Make sure to follow the instructions carefully. If you use this information, please link back to the site! Thanks
ALL DOWNLOADS ARE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST!
Apple today released iTunes 9.2 for both Windows and Mac. So you can now use iOS 4.0 on both.
Directions:
First, download iTunes 9.2.
Second, BACKUP your device in iTunes!
Third, Download the right iOS4 Firmware for your device. I recommend using firefox to download it since it downloads .ipsw files correctly and does not split it up.
Fourth, in iTunes Hold Option(Shift) and click on restore and choose the .ipsw file from your files. (Usually best to save it on your desktop)
After that, it will start restoring to iOS4 GM!
And there ya go! You should now have iOS4 working on your device.
If you are having trouble, please post in the comments. This will be an updated post if any new problems arise and workarounds need to be made. I can only fix them if I know about it. Thanks

Option and Shift are two different keys on the keyboard – do you recommend:
1. Holding down Option
2. Holding down Shift
3. Holding down Opton AND Shift
to restore and choose the .ipsw file from your files.

Working great on my 3Gs. The whole process including firmware upgrade and syncing of all the data (sms, contacts, apps, music, emails etc..) took about 30-40 minutes.
It does contact Apple to activate, but there were no problems (and why would there be any when it's a GM?).
p.s. I am not a developer.

Installed FINE BTW non-developer here! 3GS (soon to be replaced with 4)
Visual Voicemail Fine
Wallpapers are updated Fine
By following the correct steps using a MAC, install 9.2beta, BACKUP PHONE, alt/opt Restore-select correct IPSW (folks download the correct one for your application)
It will fail with the activation sever if your trying to do this through "check for updates" you must BACKUP and RESTORE don't be afraid if you have backedup your phone it will work FINE you'll lose nothing
The only hickup I've found is multi-tasking Pandora isn't working this could be occurring due to the fact the app requires an update, I specifically wanted to test it since Showman Jobs was demostrating it Monday no luck so far still hunting for a setting but again I imagine it will require an update. Please Reply if your multi-tasking is truely working I have tested this with iphone native apps such as mail and safari

Downloaded everything fine, installed iTunes 9.2 beta, but when I opt[ion]-clicked restore and selected the file an error popped up saying:
"The iPhone "***" could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible."

Installed with no noticeable problems on my 3GS as a non-dev. Question on the multi-tasking. For apps like Pandora to continue playing in the background, will they need to update their app? I figured they might. Otherwise everything is great. Love the unified inbox in Mail!

Installed perfect on a 3GS.
The only thing I had to take out the sim card, and put on another phone to remove sim pin.
I re-connected to itunes and worked perfect.

Same prob here. Pandora is running in the pop up taskbar, but audio is cut when you launch another app. hopefully its just an update and not a apple gotcha on the 3GS

My favorite iOS 4 feature: SHORT DTMF TONES!!!! I tried dialing one of my conference call strings (as a favorite), and tears welled up in my eyes as I heard these beautiful, loud, short tones! They sounded musIcal to me! And the concall, meeting ID, and PIN were recognized perfctly the first time! My life has been improved. Thank you Apple.

It gets through the update on my MB model, but then it just sits at the "connect to itunes" screen. Itunes only allows me to eject it at that point (it won't show any other info or allow me to sync/restore/etc)…tried it a few times, but no luck. I don't think this works on 2G iPod touches too well…

Yeah, I was going to make this comment too!!! When I was originally testing it i was on WiFi, but now when I am on the cellular data network I cannot get to the internet, and no apps can connect!! This is not good.

Same thing here with multi tasking. Everything is working great. But my apps don't seem to be running in the background. Must need an update from the app. I can't keep pandora running, or games don't stop mid play like advertised. So TRUE multi tasking isn't really totally working up to par. But everything else is working GREAT!

Follow the directions “exactly” Downloaded from Rapidshare with Firefox. Took maybe 30-40 min using the restore IPSW method.

Here's what you to do unplug you iphone turn off and turn back on again.
reconnect to itunes hold down shift and click restore.
select the folder location of the ipsw 3.1.2.
If you don't have it you will have to download it.
select it cross your fingers and then begin the restore.
That should get you back up and running again.

work perfect on my iPod touch 3 gen. im guessing theres a greater risk with iphone. so far i seen iphone problems with the sim and 3g network. multi-tasking is probablly because the apps need to be updated thats all.

To get visual voicemail back just click the voicemail icon, let it call in to your voicemail, listen to a message then hang up. you will see a blue pop up asking for your voicemail pin, enter it then visual voice mail comes back

Hi everyone, for some reason I keep getting the "Emergency Call" screen. I'm running on a Iphone 3GS; 5.11.07 and unlocked with blackra1n. Does any know why I keep getting that screen? I have also tried cooking up my own jailbroken IPSW but that also ends up with the "Emergency screen".

Just check the filesize as downloaded – mine was 32MB short yet it appeared OK so I hadn’t realised this was causing the problem. Worth double checking.

Same thing here. An update makes sense. I doubt they would want it built straight into the OS. Seems much more logical to just release an update on Monday for Pandora.

You can add iOS 4 without losing anything on your iPhone. Just instead of clicking 'restore', hold shift and click 'check for updates'. This will update to 4.0 without you losing anything on your iPhone. Works great for me and I was relieved to figure this out.

Worked a treat – internet showed as 3G but wouldn't connect – the upgrafe reverted back to iphone data tariff settings, so make sure you amend the internet settings as required and you'll be laughing.

When itunes first pulls the phone up it asks you if you want to restore previous settings from a backup. Click yes, and everything that was there before will be loaded back on with the new os.

I've had a couple errors. When I sync I sometimes get the error: "Could not sync. There was internal error with your device." Other than that it works fine.

Confirming on iOS4 on an iPod Touch 2G. “Alt + Update” will throw out a 3002 (network connection) error. “Alt + Restore” works fine, but you will need to resync to get your apps and data back.

Try renaming the firmware file to another name, keeping the "ipsw" suffix. I suspect the latest iTunes 9.2 download package is explicitly refusing to install firmware with the standard build 8A293 names. Doing this got me further in the process, although now I'm getting a "3014" error, which looks like it's related to my being behind a corporate firewall.

I have. Im not a developer, and it keeps giving me error message 3002, which isnt listed on the support page Apple opened. It doesnt do anything to my iPod, which is jailbroken on 3.1.3. Ive been using the one for iPod Touch 2G because while mine is a 3rd Gen, that one wouldnt even load. :l If someone could get this fixed that would be fantastic!

HELP! it finished install and then in itunes tried to contact apple then i got the below.

Just keep trying man. I had to unplug and plug in to my computer like 20 times before itunes finally recognized it and re-activated. But it's running great now.

I backed up and restored to iOS4. Everything was fine. (It was Shift not Alt btw). So, I restored my backup but the only things that were kept were my photos and email info All my iPod content and apps are gone. Not cool… Anyone know how to get these back? I doubt it.

Hey, I'm getting a "3014" error as well….I did everything; from disabling firewall to putting iPod to DFU mode to make it force-restore. All doesn't work. I also tried a normal restore (without SHIFT clicking to select the 4.0 file) and yet, it still gives me a 3014 error….I doubt even if I wait for the actual release on monday, will it work for me…

you need the carrier settings update. itunes may or may not offer it automatically while plugged in <does for os3 dunno about 4> cydia has a downloadable vs for the different carriers, but again i am unsure if they will work with os 4

I have a 3Gs and did the install and now my phone's display is like zoomed in. If I click one of the options it zooms out then goes into the app and then zooms right back in.

The phone was stuck in zoom and tripple clicking the home screen wouldn't work. I had to click on the summary tab in itunes and all the way at the bottom is an option to configure universal access. Uncheck the zoom feature and walla……IT IS TERRIFIC!!

Ok I figured this out, basically internet doesn't work if you downloaded ios 4.0 previously to todays update. They say you have the same version but in reality you dont. To prove this if you go to settings>messages> it has its features but if someone that updated through itunes goes to settings>messages they will have like 2 more options than you do. So there is a difference and baseband is a problem as well meaning internet and mms dont work unless you have the itunes update

I think this sux, i have the newest ipod touch at 2010 8 gig model, and it doesn't say that i don't get background on this ipod touch, i hate apple. this is bullshit. their products are good but they are expensive, it's so expensive because it's so beautiful.

I had the same problem. What I had to do is restore my phone from an earlier backup. From before it was jailbroken. If you don't have a prejailbroken backup. Then you will have to do a factory restore with Itunes and then enter all your contacts manually and redownload all your apps.

Ever since i installed the new IOS4 update, my Ipod on my iphone 3gs isnt working with podcasts. Every podcast I try to play, it says, this movie format is not supported by your device. I have a iPhone 3g and it was jailbroken (fw 3.1.3) with spirit. I have updated my iTunes to 9.2 so that I can use redSn0w to jailbreak on iOS 4.0. Now when I plug my phone itunes gives me an error message sayin "iPhone can not be read because Apple device has not srarted".

I don’t know if you are still following anything on this post, or if you have fixed the problem of your missing apps yet, but if all else fails you can go on the app store and redownload any of the apps you previously had. Even on paid apps, just go on buy and wait a couple of seconds and you will see a message saying something along the lines of: You already own a previous update of this aplication. Would you like to download it again for free? And then you press ‘ok’ and wait for it to download.
**MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON THE iTUNES ACCOUNT THAT YOU PURCHASED THE APP ON THE FIRST TIME**
This also let’s you get free apps from other peoples iTunes accounts. Just go to settings> app store> sign out, and then ask them to put their iTunes account details in. Then go on the app store, find the app on their iTunes account that you want and get them to type in their password to download it. I got over £200 worth of apps this way. (This method does work in the US too)
Also, what does getting the iOS4.0 update in this way let you do? I have a 3rd gen iPod touch 8GB running on firmware 3.1.3 non-jailbroken. Will this let me use the features only available on iPhone and iPod touch 3rd gen 32GB and 64GB like multitasking and springboard background? And how reliable is this?

Hey I installed 4.0 a few days ago on my iphone 3GS and although it's beautiful with its wallpapers and fancy taskbars, I am now unable to listen to any music on it.
The moment I open up ipod it closes down.
Even using the ipod shortcut in the taskbar it plays for less than a second and completely closes down.
I have switched phone off and on several times.
Any way around this or am I going to have to restore original factory settings?

Nd thn wen it askd if i wntd to restore frm previous backup or set up as new fone, i did new fone to c if tht wud work knowin tht i hadd all of my apps, pics, muwic, etc., saved in a seperate location in addition to wer itunes normally saved it. In case of emergencies. But now since doin tht nd jst putn th apps bak on my fone frm th itunes library, all my savd info in th apps r gone. My ? is, how can i get all tht savd info hak. If i canv havnt truied usin th apps i hav savd elsewhr, but is thr anothr way to get evrythng bak cuz th elsewhr apps wernt all th ones i had b4 cuz i hadnt savd my new ones thr for awhile. I didnt realize it wud delete all th savd info i had in th apps on itunes. Thot all th info was stored along wth th apps in th library.

I diwnloaded the ISO4 software onto my iphone 3gs the other day, it would not do it at frist told me i had to restore my iphone. After atempting to restore my iPhone, this would then not work. It took me 7 trys to restore my iPhone. Since restoring it and turning it on I have noticed problems. every ten mintues my message dont send or i cannot recieve any, same with calls. To make them come back i have to turn my phone on and off. In a day i do this about 25 times. whats wrong with my iPhone?!

I have the same problem. I got mine to turn on by turning off all my firewalls on my computer and restoring again. but i am still experiencing problems with my iPhone

i just got a new iphone 4 and i tunes said i need to have version 9.2 installed in order to sync the phone. I tried to download itunes version 9.2 and it even says installation was successful. but when i check itunes it still says its version 9.1 so when i try to sync the iphone i get the message again that says i need version 9.2 of itunes. i dont know what to do. i'm using a brand new macbook pro. what can I do? thanks

Hi, i am chong. i had upgraded my itunes 9.1 to 9.2. but when i click to open the itunes, a mesage pop up saying that it can not find quicktime and ask me to uninstall and install itunes again. i had try uninstall and install for few times but still the same. Hope you can advise. thanks in advance.

How can you tell what generation your ipod is? I thought mine was 2G so I downloaded the iOS4 for 2G, but when I alt-clicked restore and chose the file, it said the firmware was not compatible. In iTunes 9.2 if I check for update it says my version (3.1.3) is the most recent version. NOT. any help, please?

It took me forever to finally download the 4.0 software, but it eventually did (I have an iPod Touch 2nd generation). The only thing I wanted to change was the background, and I can't seem to figure out how to do that.

well thanks and praises go to this site as i tried to update my iphone 3gs god only knows knows how many times using the proper itunes way and all it did was constantly give m error code 21 msgs then performed as described above and seems to have worked a treat still updating from my back up but so far so good thanx again as u saved me from havin just a brick

Im going to download ios4 to my iphone 3gs, but im so freaking nerves that anything will be fucked up and i cant use my iphone,,,,,and that would be the end of my life,,,or that how it feels like, and i have heard so many that had problems with the update and also many that didnt have a single problem with it…..So i dont know how im going to do………..HELP?

When I try to update it, it goes through “extracting” but after that, it refuses updating because I don’t have network connection. My Mac doesnt have internet, and i got an iTouch 3g.

HELP!! Problem with my IPhone 3GS after installing 4.0. The “songs” in the Ipod have disappeared. All the Artists are still there but in order for me to listen to all my music on shuffle, I need to run the songs list and press all songs then shuffle. With nothing in my songs list this is impossible. I can only click on one artist at a time and shuffle through all of their songs only. This is frustrating as I depend on my music every morning going into work on the bus! Is there an easy solution?

Hey I'm having trouble restoring the IOs 4.0.1 to install it on my iPhone 3g (jailbroken, 3.1.2). Itunes always gives me Error 3194.. I tried both DFU mode and normal mode which resulted in failure.
ANYONE know how to solve this? Could I upgrade my iPhone with iTunes directly?

Half way through the installation it stops and error message comes up saying internet connection has timed out, which it hasn't as everything else is still running. Alwasy at the 40 min remaining mark. How can i fix this?

I finally jail broke my iPhone 3G with 4.0.1, and I am not a developer or hacker, and I am using iBook. However you have to make sure to have redsnow -4 version or you are going to lose it. You also have to have the firmware 4_0 I think the numbers end on 293 or again you are going bunker.
However, I unlocked too and it works fine, but I can't get my Cellular data to allow me to enter the information for tmobile so the internet works. What do I do?

When I opened my itunes one day, it said to download 4.0, so I did. Now all my Itouch shows is an adapter cable and connect to itunes. So, I try to connect to Itunes, and it doesn't register on my computer because it says I need 9.2. So, I try to update to 9.2, and it says I don't have the itunes.msi file or something along those lines. Therefore, my Ipod cannot be fixed and I can't download 9.2. Also, when I click on my itunes desktop icon, it says "this action is only valid for products currently installed", when i deff. have itunes installed on my computer. HELP!

Hi there.
I downloaded the Itouch 3G one, but when I hold SHIFT and click on Restore it does not allow me to choose the IOS4 file – it goes straight to connecting to Itunes to download it like that. The reason I am seeking an alternative way of updating my itouch is because everytime I update, itunes eventually throws a message out ERROR 9006 and then I need to start the update again. It happens all the time.. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you

All you have to do it be sure that your itunes is up to date and none of this is necessary. I have an iphone 3g and have my phone registered with itunes. I plugged my phone in (which opened itunes on my computer), went to devices in the sources list to your left, selected my phone, then I allowed it to sync and backup everything, then selected update under the summary menu…that simple! As long as you have the updated version of itunes and your phone/ipod is registered and linked to it on your computer then it's truly THAT SIMPLE. Matter a fact looking at the new features made me realize that when my daughter locked herself out of her phone a few weeks ago and I restored it then syncing everything back to it. I somehow updated it without even realizing it. Her ipod touch started giving her the options to put her apps in folders and all kinds of other cool stuff. I just thought it was something we never noticed before as she hasn't had it that long and that it does things the i phone doesn't as the i phone does things the ipod touch doesnt. Now, while updating my phone I've realized that I updated her ipod without even realizing it…lol

So, now that I've spelled it out in a rambling description I will 1,2,3,4, it for you.
IF YOU HAVE ITUNES UPDATED VERSION AND YOUR PHONE REGISTERED TO IT BOTH ON YOUR COMPUTER…follow the following steps. However, at whatever point (before you update) itunes attempts to sync and backup your device allow it to do so. This may take a while dependin on your computer. It took mine about 40 minutes.
1) Plug in your phone or ipod to your computer. This should open itunes. If not open itunes.
2) Select your phone or ipod under devices in the source center to the left.
3) In the summary pane (screen…you can click on summary at the top if it hasn't opened on it's on already) click check for updates. It should have it listed there and you click on it!! ") Mine actually had update already listed. It stated there was a new update and then had the option to restore below it.
NOTE…NEVER restore your phone if you do not have to. Although itunes does backup a lot of your information it doesn't back up ALL of it and you could lose quite a bit.
