Jailbreaking is the process of being able to do what YOU WANT on the iPhone or iPod Touch. You use different programs, such as quickpwn, pwnage tool, PurpleRa1n, redsnow, etc. to gain access to the root folder of the iPhone, which then allows you to do whatever you want. After a jailbreak, you can unlock the iPhone and add many awesome programs. Nowadays, you get Cydia and icy when you jailbreak. Both of these programs allow sources, or repositories, which adds different programs from developers. Cydia and Icy both act as a way to get the programs easily, and download them right from your device.

When you jailbreak, you have the capability to do whatever you want and can. You can modify practically anything, add cool themes, and unlock the iPhone to run on Tmobile and other international carriers that support sim cards.
