Verizon recently let out a statement  declaring that the Verizon iPhone ”In just our first two hours, …had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history”.  What’s even more amazing is that the record was broken “ between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m”. Verizon is yet to give any specific numbers in actual unit sales, however those figures are also expeced to be quite good. It’s not surprising then that AT&T is offering unlimited data to customers attempting to cancel contracts. Hit the break for the full press release: Continue reading »

This video features the newly released MyWi tethering app available only to jailbreakers though Cydia. The app now has a smaller battery footprint, an iPad app companion, and a new “Set and Forget” feature that throttles the amount of tethering ( internet sharing) between your phone and another device depeinging on how much data the device is requesting (saving a considerable amount of battery life).

According to a notification made public to all Apple employees Steve Jobs is taking a leave of absence so “he can focus on his health.” Unfortunately for this long time founder of Apple incorporated, Steve Jobs has always experienced health problems and it is not the first time that the CEO has taken some time off from the company to focus on personal matters. In fact, back in 2009 Steve took six months off in regard to similar issues. All we know for know is that he will continue to act as the Chief Executive and take part in major decisions. Temporarily Tim Cook will be responsible for day to day operations of the company. Read the official press release below.

The original e-mail notifying Apple employees:

Team,

At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.

I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.

Electronsita reports that the Verizon iPhone may be avoiding death grip issues by having the “Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS antenna… moved inside the case” thanks to the extra room available from a lack of a sim card. Many previously believed that the lack of a death grip was due to the extra perforation on the upper right hand corner of the Verizon iPhone antenna, however by doing what AntennaSys antenna engineer Spencer Webb calls “antenna diversity (two antennas in the frame with switching between them)” Apple may have solved the problem. I can’t help but think that they’ve had this solution since the problem was first reported, and that thanks to Mr. Papermaster anyone who purchased an AT&T iPhone got !#@* over.

AppleInsider reports that the same source that provided them with reliable information of the iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4 chips is now saying that the next iPhone and iPad will have a new chip on board that “is said to offer around twice the processing power at the same clock speed.” For both devices, this would mean an overall quicker experience, and could also possibly mean the implementation of HMDI output (instead of the current VGA method). If the rumors about the next iPad’s resolution are accurate this change would be expected, if not necessary, for a much greater processing power is needed to handle high resolutions on a screen the iPad’s size. This story is further supported by MacRumors, who earlier reported that “the latest iOS 4.3 beta SDK has drivers for the new SGX543 GPU”. Personally, I would put down money on the fact that the next chip for all iDevices will indeed be “twice as fast”, it seems inevitable and necessary.

Recently Cydia was updated to a new super fast, much better looking version. Unfortunately to get it you have to re-jailbreak with the new dev-team software. But, for all those of you that are like me when it comes to updating jailbreak apps (lazy) here is a quick and easy way to do it straight from your iDevice today:

From mmi.com:

“The absolute easiest way to do so is make sure you have iFile and Safari Download Manager installed, then visit http://apt.saurik.com/cydia/debs/cyd…honeos-arm.deb from your device. Remember where you download it to, and navigate there with iFile afterwards. Tap the deb it and choose install – done!”

Also, here is a change list for the new version of Cydia:

  • reduced loading changes time
  • section remapping optimizations
  • faster reloading data
  • faster, native search
  • uses public SDK classes whenever possible
  • rewritten, faster web views with zooming support
  • changes badge works again
  • more stable webviews (no crashes when queueing)
  • redesigned settings page
  • redesigned stashing page
  • faster scrolling of table views
  • bug fixes
  • ads no longer break the package views until restart
  • much better queueing UI
  • stabler refreshing bar

iPad improvements:

  • - landscape
  • - popovesr
  • - modal views that cover only a portion of the screen
  • - less annoying errors with bad internet connections downloading packages
  • - updated section mappings, less typo’d sections

Consumer Reports released its it latest rating on AT&T and other network providers, and it is not pretty. The report states that “Of all the carriers rated, AT&T was the only one to drop significantly in overall satisfaction.” Among several other factors, Consumer Reports claims that general dissatisfaction with data speeds and reliability are the cause for much of AT&T drop in ratings, stating that those surveyed ”rated data service (Web and e-mail) lower than owners of smart phones”. However the carnage doesn’t stop there: “In the 2009 survey, AT&T was at the bottom of the list locally, but came in next-to-last nationally. This time, it brings up the rear nationwide, and in every city in which Consumer Reports surveyed its readership.” Clearly AT&T is quite simply not doing enough for its smartphone customers, and midst rumors that Verizon will soon carry the iPhone, failing to do so is especially risky.

TUAW has revealed that Apple may actually be capable of delivering the much sought after white iPhone 4 as early as March next year. While they stress that “Apple could theoretically wait until June 21 to release the white iPhone 4″ they remind us that Spring starts as soon as March 20. Hopefully, the addition of these little white pamphlets teasing the iPhone for spring wont be around come June, all white iPhone hopefuls can do now is wait. Hope they last until spring so they can receive the “open season with white iPhones and rainbow Skittles abounding.”

AppleInsider reports that Verizon is currently considering to block T-Mobile and Sprint from obtaining the rights to sell the iPhone. Apparently, due to the popularity if the phone, big red is fearful of a potential loss of future customers. Considering that potential buyers are likely ro stay with their current providers should they carry the phone they may not be entirely wrong. This headline is especially shocking  when news of an Apple/Verizon deal has not even reached the general public yet. However, AppleInsider insists that “Analyst Shaw Wu with Kaufman Bros. said in a note to investors on Monday that he has heard from sources that Verizon is now more willing to accept Apple’s terms… In fact, Verizon may pay Apple even more to ensure that the iPhone remains exclusive to it and AT&T.” Hopefully a Verizon iPhone is truly no longer a pipe dream, but we can only be sure come January.
